Third grade students have been learning how our library is organized and practicing finding books and materials independently. (I-SAIL Standards 1 and 4). It takes a lot of practice but it is an essential skill for continuous life long learning. Anyone up for another round of the library’s version of Flippy Bottle? During the month of December, we are partnering with our two local libraries to showcase their subscriptions services, materials to check out or use inside the library, and events. We launched the series of lessons with the oven mitt challenge and I think students will be pleasantly surprised with what our libraries have to offer us. We're referring to our library card as the Golden Ticket (think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) because it is such an incredible and valuable resource in our community. Hope to see everyone at the library soon! I'm very late posting but recently our First grade students partnered with a third grade buddy to share the research findings about pumpkins. Together we created these amazing three dimensional pumpkins to showcase our research (first grade) and our amazing typing and Google navigating (third grade) skills!
There's s'more good books added to our collection! This year we featured our 2018 Illinois Nominees a little differently. We moved the tables and set up a "campfire" so that students could have the time and space to examine each nominee. These nominated titles are unique and great reads so I'm not surprised that these new titles flew off the shelves! Third grade students listened to "America's White Table" to help understand the significance of this holiday. This heart warming and thought provoking book and really illustrates what a veteran does and sacrifices for our freedom. Thank you veterans of all you have done and continue to do for me.
For many of us, the holidays mean family, fun, and traveling. Probably quite a bit of stress for the parents too! MyON is great for traveling or when things get really busy. MyON provides readers with almost 6,000 digital books. Use the online version if you have internet access or download up to 20 titles on a tablet to read whenever there isn’t internet. MyON also has the option to have any book read aloud which makes it great for any reader. Have you read any of Gordon Korman's books recently? They are amazing! The library was filled with excitement as second grade students explored ozobots. These tiny robots read block code and color patterns. Students applied their knowledge of maps and sequencing to code their ozobot to go from place to place on their drawn map. We returned these amazing robots to the Science Center but are looking forward to when the return next. During the month of October, Kindergarten students learned about fire safety. Students listened to a variety of books, researched firefighters on Pebble Go, and practiced going online to play a variety of fire safety games. Our focus during this unit was the importance of having an escape plan and a family meet up place. We also learned how the when to stop, drop, and roll and why we need to "get out and stay out." There is no doubt, it was an amazing and unforgettable morning and such an honor to be the first group of students to listen to Stine and Brown's new book "Mary McScary." These men were part of my reading life growing up so I was thrilled to share them with my students. Read the full article about their visit in District 102 here.
